Horus Heresy World Eaters Test Bases

Hello again. Taking Ian's advice from the comments section in my last post, I stuck to a short painting session today.  I'm still not at my best. As well as doing some work on the Chaos Dwarf BB team for Gav, I've been working on a World Eater Horus Heresy Commission.

Unusually for a "test miniature" post, it's not the paint job or colour scheme on the miniature itself that's the test. The customer sent me a painting recipe from Forge World which I've followed exactly, with the exception of adding on another level of highlights to make sure he gets his moneys worth out of me. Instead, what's being tested out here is a selection of bases to go with the painting recipe.

The army is themed around a ship-to-ship boarding action, so I've sculpted tiled bases for every miniature in the army. Now we just have to settle on a colour scheme for them. I've painted one each of standard stone, metal decking and decorative tiles. Out of the three, I think the clear winner is the decorative tiled base. I went for a turquoise shade in order to keep the palette restricted to cool blues and white, because it look's a lot better that way than if I was to use, say, white and black or white and red. On top of that, turquoise is a colour I commonly see used in home-made and commercially bought 40K terrain, so it should look at home on any 40K Battlefield, not just starship themed ones.

Adding blood, rust, chipping and the like to the base (or even the miniature itself) is an option as well.

By the way, that black bit on the base is going to be turned into a pipe or conduit, most likely the usual hazard yellow with or without black stripes. Most of the bases won't have these features, so I've left it unpainted and discrete for now.

Now to see what the customer thinks.

  2. Awesome work! Definitely love how the minis have turned out. Of the three bases I personally like the "Plain Stone Tiled" one the best. While I understand where you're coming from with the restricted palette, it strikes me as being a bit too "same-y" with the white-on-white. The two hues of blue work great, but the white boot on the white tile just sort of blends together to my eye.

Regardless of which you go with, I'm sure they're going to look spectacular! Keep up the great work!

  3. Thanks for the comments guys. My wife also prefers the plain stone tiles but the customer has gone for the metal deck plates. Even better news is that my choice of tile size seems to match up very well with the paving stones on his Zone Mortalis board.

I'm going to do some battle damage and blood stains for the customer today. Depending on how well the light stands up, I may be able to post more photographs today. If not, it'll have to be tomorrow instead.
